On Wednesday, February 16, Lower Austrian and Slovak soil and water experts met for an on-site inspection along the Morava river.
Within the framework of the SONDAR SK (Soil Strategy Network in the Danube Region) project, the topics of SOIL AWARENESS and SOIL-WATER-INTERACTION are dealt with.
In the field of „soil-water-interaction" it is a matter of integrating the connection, which can be read from soil, between soils and flood occurrences in the past 1,000 years into up-to-date map material, and of comparing existing maps with respect to their suitability with regard to the management of natural dangers and flood prevention.
Voluntary organizations (fire brigades etc.) are informed about and trained in these findings. In best-practice municipalities the basics for future planning considerations are elaborated.
Using the example of at least one cross-border region, the danger shall be specially illustrated. In an exemplary manner, the flood occurrences of 2002 or 2006 shall be explained using soil maps.
Therefore the participants of the project visited some municipalities along the Morava river, on the Lower Austrian as well as on the Slovak side.
